Plan It Before the Framing Goes Up
For New Construction Smart Home Wiring NJ projects, the best time to plan is while the drawings are still changing, long before drywall. Total Home Technologies, a design-build firm based in Roseland since 1992, works with homeowners, architects, interior designers and builders in Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Hudson, and Sussex Counties on new homes and major renovations. The work runs from early planning and prewire through installation, programming, testing and long-term support.

Already Under Construction or Mid-Renovation?
Plenty of calls come once a project is already moving. The walls close in a few weeks, another company ran some prewire, the builder's low-voltage package does not match what the family wants, the plans changed after rough-in, or nobody decided where the equipment will live.
Once the house is finished, the 24/7 Help Desk and service plans take over, with 24/7 phone support and priority booking for plan customers who need a visit.
The first step is reviewing what has been installed so far, walking the site and the current drawings, and identifying what can still be added before the walls close. Existing prewire is tested and used wherever it fits the plan, so good work is not torn out. The goal is to catch the gaps while they are still easy to fix.
Mid-Project Situations Worth a Call
✓ Walls closing soon with low-voltage plans undecided
✓ Prewire done by someone else
✓ No location set for the equipment rack
✓ Keypads and switches not coordinated with the electrician
✓ Wi-Fi coverage never planned for the new layout
✓ A renovation joining a new wing to an older house

Why Plan Technology Early
Wiring, controls and equipment are easiest, cleanest and most reliable when they are designed with the house instead of added to it.
Wiring Before the Walls Close
Speaker, network, keypad and shade wiring goes in during rough-in, when it is quick and clean, not after the drywall, when every new wire means cutting, patching and painting.
Fewer Surprises Later
When technology is on the drawings from the start, outlets, blocking, conduit and equipment space are planned with everything else, which helps avoid rework late in the build.
Clean Walls and Ceilings
Banks of switches become a few engraved keypads, speakers sit flush in the ceiling, shades hide in pockets, and the equipment sits in one ventilated room, not in every closet.
Ready on Move-In Day
Lighting, shades, music, TVs, network and cameras are programmed, tested and adjusted before move-in, so that the first night in the new house works the way it was planned to.
What Gets Planned

Planning With Your Project Team
Keypad, speaker, screen, access point, camera and shade locations are worked out with the architect, interior designer and builder, so they suit the rooms, the furniture plan and the finishes.
✓ Locations coordinated with the drawings
✓ Furniture and finish plans taken into account
✓ Plans updated as the drawings change
Prewire and Infrastructure
Low-voltage cabling, conduit and backing for wall mounts are installed at rough-in, labeled and documented so trim-out goes smoothly.

The Equipment Room
A dedicated, ventilated space with power and room to work keeps the rack quiet, cool and serviceable for years.
Lighting, Shades and Control
Lutron lighting and motorized shades are planned with Control4 or Savant from day one. See the Lutron page, the motorized shades page and the home automation page.

Audio, Video and Theater
Whole-house music, TVs and dedicated theaters need wiring, speaker locations and, for theaters, room design settled early. Details are on the home audio page and the home theater page.
Network and Outdoor Spaces
A wired network backbone and outdoor conduit for patios, pools and landscape lighting are far easier during construction. See the Wi-Fi networks page and the outdoor entertainment page.

How a New Construction Project Runs
Discovery
We review the plans with you and the architect or builder, learn how the family will live in each space, and note the schedule, the budget range and any systems chosen so far.
Design
Locations for keypads, speakers, screens, access points, cameras and shades are marked on the drawings, with equipment room needs and wire routes shared with the project team.
Installation & Programming
The prewire happens at rough-in, devices are set at trim, the rack is built and tested in the shop, and then everything is programmed and checked in every room before move-in.
Support
After move-in, the Help Desk takes questions and change requests as you settle in, and plan customers are booked ahead of others when a technician is needed back at the house.
Why Builders and Homeowners Choose Total Home
Complexity Behind the Wall
The engineering, programming, commissioning and testing belong behind the wall, not in the homeowner's hands. That idea, central to how founder Keith W. Harrison built the company, shapes every new-construction plan.
A Partner for the Project Team
Architects, interior designers and builders get one point of contact who attends to locations, schedules and details, and who stays involved through trim and move-in.

What Our Clients Say
New Construction Questions
When should we bring you in?
As early as the design stage, ideally before electrical plans are final. Early planning affects outlet locations, blocking, conduit and the equipment room.
Can you work with our electrician?
Yes. Locations and requirements are coordinated with your electrician so lighting control, power and low-voltage wiring line up.
Our builder includes a low-voltage package. Do we still need you?
Builder packages often cover basic wiring. A dedicated plan adds the network, lighting control, audio, video and control the family actually wants, and confirms the wiring supports it.
Can we prewire for things we will add later?
Yes. Conduit and extra cabling to key spots cost little during construction and leave room for future screens, speakers or shades.
Do you work on major renovations of older homes?
Yes. Renovations often mix new and existing wiring. The plan sets out what can be reused and where new pathways are needed.
